In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks. ~ John Muir
A tree draped in moss evokes such a fairy tale world for me… but the coolest thing about this moss is not the view from a distance but the close up world!
Here is how it looks from a distance…
Back to zooming in on the beauty…
THIS is what I love so much about exploring. Finding new specimens!
On one of the hikes I went on in the Los Altos area, I was not finding anything too interesting on the marked trails … after about 10 minutes, I see a deer trail and decide to wander off the main trail and explore. Soon I’m climbing over rocks, sometimes tripping on deadfall, and often bush whacking through scrub, my pants have so many new frays and tears after this trip!
I was not even sure why I was so determined to be off trail just a gut feeling that there was more interesting things to find. Soon, I turned a corner and was so excited to find this beautiful moss draped on some branches. It’s called ‘old man’s beard’ it’s not actually moss it’s a type of lichen called usnea.
The way it grows in lace like abstract patterns just amazes me. Each tendril forming a tiny leaf like skeletal structure that keeps growing, expanding, multiplying.
It was such a perfect hike … it was easy to find my way back to the main trail (sometimes I get lost when I explore, but not this time — yea!). The sun was just beginning to set, I found a little lake to sit by and drink in the evening. When I got back to the car I was filled with contentment and anticipation.
I LOVE this stuff!
P.S. It’s so fun that I get to share what I find with you. Thanks for visiting.
